Our Mission

Taconic Resources for Independence, Inc. advocates for the civil rights of individuals with disabilities in Dutchess County and empowers them to lead self-directed lives with independence and dignity.

Our Vision

We believe in a society where individuals with disabilities are able to experience full inclusion to participate in all aspects of community life and have equal access to the same opportunities and freedom as the general public.

Equal Access for People with Disabilities

Independence

Empowering individuals to live as independently as possible while remaining active and valued members of the community. Enabling everyone to grow, thrive, and lead fulfilling lives with the necessary supports in place.

Inclusion

Fostering environments that celebrate diversity and inclusion. Promoting equal access to education, and employment, and ensuring protection against discrimination.

Advocacy

Advocating for access to every aspect of life—housing, shopping, banking, voting, and entertainment. Educating the community to provide any necessary accommodations to support inclusivity and independence.

CORE SERVICES

PEER COUNSELING

Peer Counseling is provided between two or more individuals with disabilities, to share ideas and experiences about living with a disability, in order to gain greater awareness and control over one’s own life.

INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS TRAINING

Independent Living Skills Training teaches everyday life skills and is often provided by people with disabilities. Training may include budgeting, meal preparation, arranging transportation, or personal assistance services, job seeking, and self-advocacy.

INFORMATION & REFERRAL SERVICES

Information and Referral Services aim to provide individuals with resources and options that may be necessary in making informed choices about living, learning, and working independently.

INDIVIDUAL & SYSTEMS ADVOCACY

Individual and Systems Advocacy addresses access to equal opportunities in exercising social, economic, educational, and legal rights. Independent Living Centers work with individuals, community organizations, state/national networks; to promote full inclusion of people with disabilities, and to improve the implementation of existing laws: federal, State, and local.
